Great Moments In Film – Stagecoach (1939)

As if I could resist putting a little John Ford on here. Stagecoach was the first of many movies in which he worked with John Wayne (in what is The Duke’s first major starring role) and the first of his many films to feature the now fabled Monument Valley as the setting. Here, a socially mixed group (think The Breakfast Club) are are forced to travel together. Unfortunately for them, their route takes them through hostile Apache territory. This is the chase scene that’s toward the end of the film.

The chase is exhilarating with shots only John Ford could think of (not to mention the great music). Some of the stunts are absolutely incredible, many of which are still duplicated to this day.

By the way, Thomas Mitchell plays the drunk doctor. In 1939 alone, he was not only in this film, but he was also in films such as: Gone With the Wind, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Now, THAT’S a good year.

Enjoy!
