Great Moments In Film – It Happened One Night (1934)

It Happened One Night (Review) is one of the best romantic comedies I have ever seen. It is genuinely funny, and while we all know that the leads will end up together in the end, the movie allows us to doubt that outcome for longer than the usual 30 seconds. The chemistry displayed by Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert is second to none. Pretty funny for a movie that neither of them wanted to make.

Here we see Gable’s street-wise Peter try to show Colbert’s rich girl Ellie how to hitchhike. Obviously it doesn’t go as planned, but she has an idea of her own. Watch for her sarcasm while talking to Peter in the beginning. It’s hard to miss. And notice the carrots. Gable’s performance would inspire another more famous character that would soon follow. One that would often make a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

I hope you all enjoy it and excuse the subtitles. Clips of movies, especially older ones, are hard to come by.
