Great Moments In Film – M (1931)

As we continue our journey through great moments, we have finally stumbled upon the German filmmaker Fritz Lang. Probably best known for Metropolis, Lang had a very impressive career releasing quite a variety of movies. With M, Lang created one of the most suspenseful and thought-provoking film about a child murderer and the chaos he creates in a German city.

This would be the opening of M. For my money, it’s one of the creepiest and tension filled opening few minutes in history. Notice how everything builds and how things are implied rather than shown. I can’t help but to always think of this movie whenever I hear the song “The Man in Black (Peter Lorre)” whistles.

  1. This is without a doubt my favourite Lang Film. it’s chilling and deep without being preachy. It’s a real gem.
