Great Moments In Film – A Rebel Without a Cause (1955)

Starring the iconic James Dean as Jim Stark, A Rebel Without a Cause is one of my favorite teen angst movies. As I’ve said before, we tend to look at the 1960s as the decade of turmoil while the 1950s are a glorious time. It’s interesting to see how entertainment (movies and music) show a very large disconnect between parents and their children. I’d argue that distance was always there and it’s something that will always be there.

The issue at hand is spelled out as you watch, so I don’t really have to explain too much. The scene projects the constant struggle that adults have with youth. While the parents here are cynical and all about self preservation, their son is about honor and idealism. In addition to all of that, we have a son in conflict with his overbearing mother, begging his spineless father to finally make a stand. Parents just don’t understand stuff.

Thanks Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff!
