Great Moments In Film – Duck Soup (1933)

I will be the first to admit that the Marx Brothers act isn’t for everyone. I actually grew tired of Harpo’s antics during Duck Soup quite quickly, but couldn’t stop laughing at Groucho and Chico (who are both hilarious in this). In Duck Soup, Groucho plays a dimwitted president/dictator of fictional Freedonia who declares war against the neighboring Sylvania over a woman. Well, at least she’s a wealthy one, I guess. Chico and Harpo play even more dimwitted spies trying to steal important plans from Freedonia.

As with anything they do, it all gets out of control in an hurry. This begins with Chico and Harpo trying to find the previous mentioned plans…without making a sound, of course. That doesn’t work out terribly well as you would guess. Toward the end would be the famous mirror scene where Chico and Groucho mimic each other almost perfectly. It’s quite impressive to say the least.
