Great Moments In Film – Easy Rider (1969)

Easy Rider was one of the movies that signaled the end of the old studio system of Hollywood. Jack Warner actually hated this movie and the rest of the “hippie” movies like it. I give full credit to TCM’s “Moguls and Movie Stars” miniseries for all of that knowledge. Who says you can’t learn things from television?

The film itself is an interesting one. It’s a strong look at the American Dream and how we often, no matter what our intentions are, fall short of it. I will freely admit that some of it is off-putting (especially the seemingly never-ending acid trip that we experience along with the characters), but there’s a beauty to it as well; most notably, the road scenes in which the desert landscape is filmed to the soundtrack of the music of the day. Of those, my favorite is the one seen below. The song is “The Weight” by The Band as you can see by the title of the video.
