Great Moments In Film – LA Confidential (1997)

LA Confidential is a superb movie that was completely overlooked due tot he behemoth that was Titanic. To be fair, the big boat overshadowed several superior films, but that’s for another time. It involved a murder who’s roots reach much deeper than what initial appears (shocker, right?). It’s so well done, has an absolutely brilliant cast, and shows that film noir can still succeed in modern times provided one makes it correctly.

A big part of the movie is a prostitution ring with a twist. See, these are just your normal run of the mill call girls, these girls look like famous Hollywood actresses (either naturally or with a little plastic surgery to help). For example, Kim Basinger’s character looks like Veronica Lake. In this scene, the ambitious and young police officer Edmund Exley (Guy Pierce) crashes a dinner date trying to get some information out of one of the girls. It doesn’t go as planned. It’s such a great scene and is absolutely made by the reactions of Kevin Spacey. A nice moment of brevity in an otherwise very serious film.
