Great Moments In Film – In the Heat of the Night (1967)

In the Heat of the Night is a great crime mystery film. There’s been a murder rural Mississippi and it’s up to Police Chief Gillespie (Rod Steiger in an Oscar winning role), a southern white man, and Officer Virgil Tibbs (the incredible Sidney Poitier), a northern black man, to solve the case…not to mention keep Tibbs alive long enough to do it.

In this scene, the two are investigating a man named Endicott (Larry Gates), a rival of the victim. Tibbs definitely thinks he’s involved, especially as there’s motive and circumstantial evidence to suggest as much. Things get rather heated, no pun intended, and, well, you can see what happens in the clip. Needless to say, this sent some shock waves around. I love Enditcott’s reaction at the end of the scene. So much for all the bravado, eh?
